چکیده
Abstract Volcano flank collapses have been documented at ocean islands worldwide and are capable of triggering devastating tsunamis, but little is known about the precursory processes deformation changes prior to failure. This makes 22 December 2018 collapse Anak Krakatau in Indonesia a key event geosciences. Here, we provide direct insight into final collapse. We analyzed interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data from 2014 studied link between trend intrusion occurrence through analogue modeling. found that was already moving least 4 yr collapse, consistent with slow décollement slip. Movement rates averaged ~27 cm/yr, they underwent two accelerations coinciding distinct events January/February 2017 June 2018. Analogue models suggest these occurred by (re)activation fault linked short episode magma intrusion. During intrusion, observed change internal faults, where outward-directed accelerated while inward faults became partially blocked. These observations unstable oceanic flanks do not disintegrate abruptly, their preceded observable deformations can be new intrusions.

Magma Pathways and Their Interactions Inferred from InSAR and Stress Modeling at Nyamulagira Volcano, D.R. Congo
A summit and upper flank eruption occurred at Nyamulagira volcano, Democratic Republic of Congo, from 2–27 January 2010. Eruptions at Nyamulagira during 1996–2010 occurred from eruptive fissures on the upper flanks or within the summit caldera and were distributed along the ~N155E rift zone, whereas the 2011–2012 eruption occurred ~12 km ENE of the summit. 3D numerical modeling of Interferometr...
متن کاملConsequences of volcano sector collapse on magmatic storage zones: insights from numerical modeling
Major volcano flank collapses strongly affect the underlying magmatic plumbing system. Here, we consider the magma storage zone as a liquid pocket embedded in an elastic medium, and we perform numerical simulations in two-dimensional axisymmetric geometry as well as in three dimensions in order to evaluate the consequences of a major collapse event. We quantify the pressure decrease induced wit...
متن کاملFlank instability at Mt. Etna
Due to their constant and relatively rapid growth, volcanic edifices are inherently unstable. Flank instability is observed at many polygenetic stratovolcanoes, composite volcanoes and shield volcanoes worldwide. Flank instability may occur suddenly, or develop in a more continuous and subtle way, accelerated by triggering events (magma emplacement, eruptions and earthquakes). Destabilization i...
متن کاملEruptive history and magmatic stability of Erebus volcano, Antarctica: Insights from englacial tephra
A tephrostratigraphy of the active Antarctic volcano, Mt. Erebus, was determined from englacial tephra on the ice-covered flanks of Erebus and an adjacent volcano. The tephra are, used to reconstruct the eruptive history and magmatic evolution of Erebus. Scanning electron microscope images and Image Particle Analysis suggest the tephra formed in phreatomagmatic and magmatic eruptions and in som...
متن کاملProbabilistic modeling of eruptive activity at Etna volcano using InSAR surface displacements and ATSR thermal radiance
[1] Satellite monitoring offers a powerful means to regularly characterize the mechanical and thermal states of active volcanoes. Satellite-measured surface inflation and radiant heat flux reflect the pressurization and discharge, respectively, of a magmatic system, suggesting that studying these parameters together may help in better understanding future eruptive activity. We incorporate InSAR...
